Commissioners table spending cap measure
Maury County commissioners canned a resolution Monday night that would have put a spending cap on the county’s budget in an effort to thwart a property-tax increase.
The commission voted 13-9 to table the resolution, which would have required county officials to present budgets at the same or a smaller amount than their previous year’s spending plans.
Commissioner Andy Jackson, who works as a deputy, said he thought it was too premature in the budget process to pass such a measure. He said he is also concerned capping spending might not be practical for some departments.
“I think it is the county commission’s job to make these cuts at the appropriate time,” Jackson said.
