Parents invited to meetings on school standards

State changes requirements

From Columbia Daily Herald

Big changes are in store for students who will be entering high school soon.

Maury County Public Schools will hold several meetings this month and in early May to familiarize parents with new academic standards adopted by the state.

“These are changes that can’t be sprung on students the year they graduate,” said Sharon Kinnard, a spokeswoman for the school system. “They are going to have to know about these requirements from the time they enter high school so they can plan accordingly.”

The meetings are aimed at students who will be entering grades five-eight next academic year.

Starting with the graduating class of 2013, students will be required to complete an additional year of high school math. Students will also have to take a semester of personal finance and earn two additional credits of physical education.

The changes, which will start with students presently in the seventh grade, will likely require school officials hire additional teachers or provide additional training for existing staff, Kinnard said.

Kinnard said it’s important parents attend one of five meetings. Parents can attend a meeting outside their district if necessary, Kinnard said.

Parents of students at Whitthorne, Baker, McDowell, Woodard and Brown schools should attend a 6:30 p.m. April 22 meeting at Central High School’s auditorium.

Parents of students at Cox, Riverside, Howell, Highland Park and Wright schools should attend a 6:30 p.m. April 28 meeting at E.A. Cox’s gymnasium.

Parents of Santa Fe School students should meet at 6:30 p.m. May 1 at the Santa Fe Theatre.

Parents of Mt. Pleasant and Hampshire students should meet at 6:30 p.m. May 15 at Mt. Pleasant Middle School’s auditorium.

Parents of Culleoka School students should meet at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at Culleoka School’s auditorium.
